An airport at the heart of the Mediterranean arc

Located in the commune of Mauguio, 7 kilometers from the Montpellier metropolis, at the center of an urban area of over 600,000 inhabitants, Montpellier-Méditerranée Airport is linked to a dense road network that serves a catchment area of over 2,000,000 inhabitants within a 60-minute drive.

    1938

    • Landing of the first plane at Fréjorgues.

    1944

    • Bombing of the platform by the Allied Air Force to destroy the Nazi German aircraft parked there

    1946

    • Opening of the first civil terminal

    1964

    • The Montpellier Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIM) is awarded temporary commercial management of the airport.

    1966

    • Opening of the first Air Inter routes.

    1974

    • Commercial operating licence granted to the CCIM for 30 years.

    1976

    • Concorde tests

    1990

    • The airport handles one million passengers
    • A new 14,000 m² passenger terminal was inaugurated in 1990. Access to aircraft is now possible via 2 pre-passways and 3 gangways.

    1994

    • Fréjorgues Airport becomes Montpellier-Méditerranée Airport.

    2001

    • The arrival of the TGV Méditerranée means that Paris is now less than 3 hours 30 minutes away from Montpellier by land. This new competition will have a major impact on traffic to Paris Orly.

    2002

    • Arrival of the first low-cost airline, Ryanair, with the opening of 2 new routes to London Stansted and Frankfurt Hahn.
    • ESMA (aeronautical training school) opens on the platform.

    2003

    • The airport is declared an ‘airport of national interest’ by decree. 

    2004

    • Air Littoral, the company ‘des Gens du Sud’, headquartered in Montpellier and which had made the airport its hub, disappears.

    2007

    • The Noise Exposure Plan (PEB) was approved by the Préfet de l'Hérault on 15 February 2007, to allow for future traffic growth without burdening the population with noise pollution.

    2008

    • Signing in October of the Environmental Code of Conduct by the aviation industry at Montpellier-Méditerranée. The signatories agreed to make an active contribution to achieving the objectives of the Noise Environment Quality Charter.

    2009

    • On 23 June 2009, Montpellier-Méditerranée Airport, a CCIM concession, was transformed into a limited company with a Management Board and Supervisory Board and capital of 148,000 euros. S.A. Aéroport de Montpellier-Méditerranée was born.

    2011

    • Montpellier-Méditerranée Airport once again passes the 1,300,000 passenger mark.
    • In December, the magnetic declination in France resulted in the runways being oriented 12L/30R (previously 13L/31R).

    2013

    • Opening of a new Departures circuit (new screening checkpoints, redevelopment of the Duty Free area, redevelopment of the boarding lounges).

    2014

    • Montpellier-Méditerranée Airport passes the 1,400,000 passenger mark.

    2015

    • New record for Montpellier Airport with 29 direct destinations during the summer season. Commissioning of a photovoltaic plant powered by shaded areas installed in the car parks.

    2016

    • Traffic growth intensifies to reach 1,679,000 passengers.

    2017

    • The all-time record set in 2000 is broken. Thanks to 30 destinations operated by 16 airlines, Montpellier-Méditerranée Airport handled 1,849,410 passengers (an increase of 340,000 passengers in two years).

    2018

    • The hub begins its metamorphosis: construction of an additional terminal building as an extension to the existing one; construction of a hotel complex under the Ibis Style and Ibis Budget banners (by the Arrelia group) and a first building dedicated to the tertiary sector (by the CFC company) at the entrance to the hub; upgrading of the main access road; opening of the freight and logistics site; commissioning of the 100% Web P6 car park.

    2019

    • Opening of Hall 2, the new departure circuit with its shops offering a unique runway view. The Baltona duty-free shop, the bars, boutiques and catering outlets of Bread & Co and Trib's get a facelift.
    • Deployment of baggage security equipment to the highest European standards.
    • All-time traffic record of 1,935,000 passengers.

    2020-2022

    • The health crisis has a major impact on air transport. Traffic at Montpellier is reduced to 800,000 customers in 2020 and 1,100,00 customers in 2021. 
    • Transavia opens its fourth national base in Montpellier and offers an increasingly dense European service.
    • NG promotion moved its head office into its brand new building designed by Ora-ïto.

    2023

    • Traffic continues to recover, with 1,747,000 passengers recorded. Transavia takes over the routes to Orly previously operated by Hop! 
    • Work began on the cargo area, where more than 1,000 employees are expected to be employed!
    • ESG Montpellier installs its new campus on the hub (by the company CFC).
    • Commissioning of the geothermal installations, fitting of the first 400hz aircraft workstations.

    Acting as mediator between the various partners: airlines, assistance companies, Air Transport Gendarmerie, Civil Aviation, Local Air Base Service.
